Obituary of George J. Kalapos Sr.

George J. Kalapos Sr., age 91, of Trumbull, CT, beloved husband of Rose DeSimone Kalapos, died peacefully on Tuesday, January 20, 2015 at St. Vincent's Medical Center with his loving family by his side. Born on April 11, 1923, he was the son of the late Julius J. and Ethel Benson Kalapos. George graduated from Bassick High School and attended Bridgeport Junior College until he was drafted into the military. As a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he served as a Surgical Technician at the 178th General Hospital in Rheims, France; supporting the Battle of the Bulge. Before his retirement in 1985, he was an Experimental Test Technician at Sikorsky Aircraft, with over 27 years of dedicated service; and he was also a tool & die maker. George enjoyed woodworking, including the construction of a speed boat, and loved building and flying radio controlled model airplanes, for which he won many awards. He was also a former member of the Westbrook Elks Lodge # 1784. George had a great sense responsibility for his family and had a true love for his wife, Rose. He was a kind, gentle, and quiet man, who will be missed by all who knew him. In addition to his beloved wife of 66 years, Rose, survivors include three loving children: George J. Kalapos Jr., and his wife Felicia of Stratford; Richard J. Kalapos and his wife Katherine of Deep River; and Mary Ann Kovacic and her husband Ivan of Fairfield. His eight cherished grandchildren include, Jennifer Kalapos Parker and her husband Jay, Jessica Kalapos Carroll and her husband Brian, Jaclyn Kalapos-Rios and her husband Jim, Jeffrey Z. Kalapos and his wife Kelsey, Kristine E. Kalapos, Scott J. Kalapos, Sara Rossley and her husband John, and Lindsay Elizabeth Kovacic. He is also survived by nine adored great grandchildren. Friends are invited to meet directly at St. Theresa's Church, 5301 Main St., Trumbull on Friday, January 23, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. for a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment with military honors will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Trumbull. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.
